Hendrik "Henk" Wittenberg 1927-2016
Hendrik "Henk" Wittenberg – 89, of Kentville, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2016 in Shannex-Orchard Court, Kentville. Born in Hardenberg, The Netherlands, he was a son of the late Dirk and Hendrikje (Bouwhuis) Wittenberg. He served with the Dutch Army in Indonesia from 1947-1950. In 1952 he married his wife, Gerritdina and in 1954 they immigrated to Canada with their eldest child. He worked for many years in chicken broiler houses and was also employed as a custodian for Acadia University, from where he retired. He was a member of the Christian Reformed Church, Kentville. He loved music and could play the organ, accordion and mouth organ, all by ear. He also enjoyed woodworking. He is survived by his wife, Gerritdina (Gerrits); three daughters, Hedy Colgan (Brian), Dartmouth; Anne Hayes (Brian), Dartmouth; Diana Wittenberg, Centreville; two sons, Bernard (Sally), Kentville; Dennis (Karen), Gaspereau; grandchildren; Sarah (Matthew), Craig (Sarah), Ryan, Cory, Alex, Erin, Matthew, Nathan, Logan and Jolene (Aaron); step grandchildren, Justin and Brandon; seven great grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by two sisters, Mina and Janna; three brothers, Gerrit, Jan and Dirk. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday, May 9, 2016 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2016 in the Canard Community Church, Upper Canard, Kings County, Reverend Bert VanderBeek officiating. Burial will take place in the Canard Burial Ground, Upper Canard. A reception will follow in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Donations in memory may be made to the I.W.K. Health Centre Foundation, the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation or the charity of your choice. A special thank you to the nurses and staff at Shannex-Orchard Court for the compassion, care and kindness shown to Henk and his family. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
