Notes for Euphemia Wilson Gomez
Woonde sinds 1964 in Australiƫ.
Euphemia mailde Valerie en mij op 22 februari 2006: My father George Robert Gomez who had served in the First World War 1914-1918, being discharged in 1918 was at last able to take up his medical studies at Edinburgh University, Scotland, to which he had gained a scholarship from Port of Spain, Trinidad. About 1920 while on holiday in Oban on the west coast of Scotland with other medical students under the tutelage of Dr Robert Lim, lecturer in physiology at Edinburgh University, he became acquainted with Jessie Aitken Torrance, also on holiday there with her parents and her sister Margaret ("Peggy"). Two romances ensued: that of Peggy and Dr Robert Lim, who married in 1921, and the engagement of George R. Gomez to Jessie A. Torrance, which continued during the remainder of his medical studies. He graduated in M. B., Ch. B. in 1924 and they were married in October that year in Glasgow, Scotland. Dr Gomez had been offered a post in the Colonial Medical Service in Nevis, B. W. I., and consequently they left Scotland for the Caribbean, visiting Trinidad to introduce Jessie to his family before going on to Nevis. I was born there in Charlestown on 11/12/1925, my brother Joseph on 14/3/1927 and my sister Jessie on 8/10/1928. My baby sister Audrey Christina died about 1930 only a few mmonths old. By this time my father was in chare of the hospital in St Kitts. Sadly he died in 1931 of peritonitis. My mother made the decision to return with her three children to her previous family home in Clydebank, Scotland where her widowed mother could provide accommodation. Consequently we were brought up there, my mother being helped by her own mother and by her brother James, who shared the house, and by another brother, Tom, who lived in Glasgow. I went to Glasgow University from 1943-46 and married John Hendry 26/9/1946. We both studied at St. Andrew's University till June, 1947. In 1947-8 we studied at Toulouse University in France. From 1948-1964 we taught at various schools in Scotland and meanwhile accumulated a family of six children. In 1964 we emigrated to Sydney, Australia, joining my sister and her husband, Cameron Bannerman with their three sons and our mother, who had all emigrated in 1962. John and I both taught here till retiring at 60 years old and we enjoyed a few twilight years mostly in the garden until he had a stroke in 1991. He was in a nursing home till he died on 28/2/1995. Since then I have lived here with my two oldest sons who are both unmarried, still in our same house and keeping in contact with other family members including my daughter Kate who lives in Germany with her husband Rudi Menster, daughter and son. My brother Joe married Pearl Orr and lived in Glasgow for many years till his tragic death in a road accident. They had two daughters, the elder of whom, Elaine, lives with her husband and children in Glasgow, while the younger, Valerie (!) married Dr John Gan of Sydney, and they live in Port Macquarie, NSW, with a son and a daughter.
