Obituary Joseph Holmes.
SPRINGFIELD - A memorial Mass will be celebrated Oct. 19 for Joseph Peter "Pete" Holmes of Springfield, who died Oct. 14 of cancer. He was 72. Holmes was born July 6, 1933, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Harry and Katherine Funke Holmes. He married Frances Longacre on Jan. 11, 1958, in Springfield. Holmes served in the Navy from 1953 to 1957 and the Navy Reserves from 1957 to 1961. He was awarded the Good Conduct and China Sea medals. He worked as a railroad engineer for 35 years for Southern Pacific Railroad. Holmes enjoyed fishing, woodworking and sports. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Barbara Holmes of Springfield and Elizabeth Ayer of Cottage Grove; two sons, Leonard of Springfield and Patrick of Hillsboro; a brother, Harry of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three sisters, Joan Phillips of Lisbon, Iowa, and Mary Harmon and Rita Reilly, both of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren; and five step- grandchildren. Recitation of the rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. today, Oct. 18, at the Newman Center. Wednesday's service will be at 10 a.m. at the Newman Center. Inurnment will be at Springfield Memorial Gardens.
